GreenWave is an innovative initiative under the Impact Innovation Net Zero Industry program. Its mission is to convert Nordic forest biomass (e.g., lignin from the pulp and paper industry) into high-quality graphite, using microwave rapid-heating technology.
According to a preliminary life-cycle assessment (LCA) by Vinnova, this process offers significantly lower energy consumption and environmental impact compared to conventional graphite production.
The project has successfully established a resilient and stable raw-material supply chain, laying the groundwork for future industrial scale-up.
Granode Materials’ Role
As a committed industrial partner, Granode Materials will contribute in several key areas:
- Graphite Quality Development — Collaborating to optimize the structure and performance of bio-graphite to meet battery-grade standards.
- Industrialization and Scale-up — Assessing the feasibility of scaling up the microwave graphitization process for mass production.
- Sustainability and Value-Chain Analysis — Participating in life-cycle analysis (LCA) and supply-chain optimization to ensure a robust green production pathway.
Project Achievements & Future Outlook
- The team has achieved its initial objectives: optimizing microwave graphitization and producing high-quality bio-graphite validated via Raman spectroscopy and SEM.
- A stable raw-material feedstock chain has been secured, and the technical feasibility of the process has been confirmed.
- Looking forward, GreenWave has the potential to build a locally based, sustainable graphite value chain in Europe, reducing reliance on imported or fossil-based graphite.
- For Granode Materials, this project represents a strategic opportunity to deepen its role in the battery industry, particularly in supplying graphite anodes for lithium-ion batteries, thereby contributing to the green and resilient energy transition.
